John E. Joseph is Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics and English Language at the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, University of Edinburgh. He maintains active roles in teaching, research supervision, and international academic organizations while contributing to linguistic theory through innovative interdisciplinary work.

His research spans Applied Linguistics, Semiotics, and History of Linguistics, with recent focus on schizolinguistics and schizosemiotics through analysis of pathological language cases. Current projects examine Karl Tuczek's Analyse einer Katatonikersprache (1921) and Louis Wolfson's Le Schizo et les langues (1970), bridging clinical observations with theoretical frameworks. His work integrates historical perspectives with contemporary cognitive approaches to language disorders.
Recent publications including the 2025 Bloomsbury Handbook of Saussure demonstrate sustained engagement with structuralist foundations while expanding into atypical language manifestations. His scholarly output consistently connects historical linguistic ideas with modern theoretical challenges across multiple subdisciplines.
