John E. Akin is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice University, holding a joint appointment between both departments. He is affiliated with Rice’s research groups in computational mechanics and engineering design.
Dr. Akin earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (1964), M.S. in Engineering Mechanics from Tennessee Technological University (1966), and Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (1968).
His research focuses on adaptive finite element analysis, computer-aided design, and computational mechanics. He has contributed extensively to numerical methods for structural analysis and interdisciplinary computational techniques.
Professional recognitions include Fellow status in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME, 1987) and editorial leadership roles for Engineering Computations and Multiscale and Multidisciplinary Modeling, Experiments and Design. He is active in engineering societies such as ASME, ASCE, and the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics.
