Pol D. Spanos

Pol D. Spanos is the Lewis B. Ryon Professor of Mechanical & Civil Engineering and Professor of Materials Science and NanoEngineering at Rice University. A Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), he holds affiliations with multiple international academies including the National Academy of Greece and Academia Europaea. His research focuses on dynamics, vibrations, nonlinear systems, and probabilistic mechanics with applications in structural, biomedical, and aerospace engineering.

• Education: Varvakeios High School → National Technical University (Greece) → Caltech (M.S. Civil Engineering, Ph.D. Applied Mechanics).

Research interests span signal processing algorithms, fatigue/fracture mechanics of nanocomposites, and dynamic systems under hazardous loads. His methods integrate stochastic modeling, finite element codes, and supercomputing.

Award highlights include the ASCE Theodore von Kármán Medal (2003), ASME Gold Medal (2021), and Humboldt Foundation Senior Researcher Award (1995). He has authored/edited 20+ books, published over 400 papers, and supervised 60+ Ph.D. students.

• Leadership: Chair of ASCE Engineering Mechanics Division, Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics.

Consulting and litigation expertise include serving as an Expert Witness in intellectual property cases. Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Texas and Greece.
