John Dueber is the Lester John and Lynne Dewar Lloyd Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He leads the Dueber Lab, which focuses on developing strategies to engineer modular control over living cells, particularly through compartmentalization of metabolic pathways in organelles like peroxisomes. His work spans synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, and biotechnology applications in biofuels and specialty chemicals. Dr. Dueber holds a faculty position in the Department of Bioengineering within the College of Engineering.
Research interests include enhancing organelle capacity for multi-enzyme pathways, developing CRISPR-based diversification tools, and optimizing microbial strains for industrial applications. His lab employs machine learning to guide metabolic engineering efforts and has pioneered methods for protecting group chemistry in sustainable dye production.
