He has been a faculty member since 1996, with prior roles including visiting professorships at MIT, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Toulouse School of Business. His research focuses on household finance, municipal bond markets, mutual funds, retirement behavior, and transaction costs. Chalmers holds a PhD and MS from the University of Rochester (1995, 1992) and a BA in Economics from Middlebury College (1985).
He has contributed to major journals including the Journal of Finance and Review of Financial Studies, while serving on editorial review boards. Awards include the TIAA-CREF Samuelson Award (2014) and Beta Gamma Sigma’s Professor of the Year (2007–2008).
Key research themes include liquidity dynamics in municipal bond funds, efficacy of state retirement plans, and conflicted investment advice. His studies highlight how timely data disclosure improves muni markets and how auto-enrollment boosts retirement savings. He has also explored insurer purchases as signals of managerial opportunism in corporations.
Chalmers’ career bridges academia and practice, with expert testimony on municipal bond litigation and public finance roles before 1989. His current projects examine ESG factors and firm ownership structures alongside organizational form impacts on fund liquidity.
