John Capo

John Capo is Assistant Professor of Communication and Media Studies and Chair of the Department at Lycoming College, where he joined the faculty in 2020. He previously taught at New York University, The City University of New York, and The Fashion Institute of Technology.

His research and teaching focus on media analysis, communication for business and creative purposes, social media theory, public relations, advertising, and speechwriting. He explores how narratives shape public perception and brand identity, particularly in digital spaces. His work bridges academic theory and real-world application in entertainment, politics, and crisis communication.

His recent academic presentation, Storytelling in Advertising: From Blair Witch to Barbie, analyzed the evolution of narrative techniques in branding. The work reflects broader trends in digital storytelling, audience engagement, and cultural resonance across media platforms.

Capo has advised curriculum committees at CUNY and SUNY, served as faculty advisor for career fairs and virtual commencement events, and brought extensive industry experience into the classroom. His background includes founding a PR firm, directing theater productions, and moderating Reddit’s largest AMA community, advising on communication strategies for political campaigns, celebrities, and global media events.

He has led innovative projects such as the NYC Drone Film Festival and FEARnyc, and produced theatrical works like the musical versions of Saved by the Bell and Showgirls. He curated Spotlight on Journalism, a global Reddit initiative promoting press freedom.
