معرفی
John C Bischof is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He also serves as Mechanical Engineering Leader in the Health Sciences Administration Office of Academic Clinical Affairs, an Adjunct Professor in Surgery, and Director of both the Advanced Technologies for Preservation of Biological Systems (ATP-BIO) and the Institute for Engineering in Medicine. His interdisciplinary work bridges engineering principles with medical applications, focusing on technologies that preserve biological systems for transplantation and regenerative medicine.
Dr. Bischof's research focuses on cryopreservation, thermal therapies, and biopreservation technologies. His work spans fundamental biophysical investigations of cryoprotectant agents and mathematical modeling of solute-solvent transport to clinical applications in organ transplantation and cancer treatment. Key areas include cryosurgery, vitrification, thermal treatment, cooling rate optimization, water transport in biological systems, and nanowarming technologies. His research has significant implications for organ transplantation, cancer therapy, and regenerative medicine applications.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong trend toward translational research that bridges fundamental biophysics with clinical applications. His work on magnetic heating for thermal ablation shows innovation in cancer treatment technologies, while his research on dielectric properties of cryoprotective agents provides critical foundational knowledge for organ preservation. His publications on biopreservation ethics and organoid manufacturing highlight his leadership in shaping the future of transplantation medicine and regenerative therapies.
Dr. Bischof leads several major collaborative projects including the Mayo/UMN Partnership in Regenerative Medicine (as Principal Investigator), the Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics, and contributes to the University of Minnesota Clinical and Translational Science Institute. His research has attracted significant funding from state and institutional sources to advance preservation technologies for biological systems.
As Director of the Advanced Technologies for Preservation of Biological Systems (ATP-BIO) and the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, Dr. Bischof oversees interdisciplinary teams working at the intersection of engineering and medicine. His leadership fosters collaboration between engineers, clinicians, and basic scientists to develop innovative solutions for preserving biological tissues and organs, with applications spanning from cancer treatment to organ transplantation.
