John Brierley is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Programme Lead at Oxford Brookes University, within the School of Sport, Nutrition and Allied Health Professions. Since joining in 2009, he has played a central role in the management and delivery of undergraduate sport programmes, including Sport & Exercise Science and Sport, Coaching and Physical Education. His responsibilities span curriculum development, student mentorship, admissions coordination, and academic governance.
Education: John holds an MSc and a B.Ed (Hons), and has over three decades of experience in education and sport science.
Research Interests: His research is deeply rooted in sport and exercise psychology, with a focus on elite performance contexts. Key areas include:
- Emotional resilience and adversity in athletes
- Relative age effects in sport
- Psychological coping in competitive environments
- Talent development and sport expertise
- Psychological skills training and transferable outcomes
He is an active member of the Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity Research Group (SEPARG) and supervises postgraduate dissertations in organisational leadership and management for healthcare programmes in Hong Kong.
Leadership & Consultancy: John has served as Team Leader for England Athletics at the Commonwealth Games (2002, 2010), and as Team Manager for the Great Britain University Sports Association at multiple World Student Games. He has consulted for elite teams including England Women’s Hockey, England U21 Rugby, Crystal Palace F.C., West Ham United F.C., and Birmingham City F.C.
Teaching: John leads and co-teaches modules across all undergraduate levels, including:
- Introduction to Sport and Exercise Psychology (Level 4)
- Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology (Level 5)
- Talent Identification and Development (Level 5)
- Advanced Practice in Sport and Exercise Psychology (Level 6)
He also supervises independent study projects and dissertations on topics such as emotional resilience, relative age effects, and psychological preparation for competition.
