John Bowes, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Musculoskeletal & Dermatological Sciences at the University of Manchester. His research focuses on genetics and genomics of rheumatological disorders, particularly inflammatory joint diseases such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being. Key research areas include genome-wide association studies, single-nucleotide polymorphism analysis, and functional genomics using CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Collaborations span global institutions, with recent studies involving multi-omics analysis of T cells and Mendelian randomization approaches.
Bowes has published 105 research outputs, including peer-reviewed articles in journals like Genome Biology and Arthritis and Rheumatology. He led the project 'Stratification of Psoriasis Patients at High Risk of Psoriatic Arthritis' (2016–2019), focusing on genetic, environmental, and lifestyle risk factors. A notable dataset he co-created explores genetic instruments for BMI-related Mendelian randomization analyses.
His research emphasizes translating genetic insights into clinical applications, with studies on multimorbidity patterns in rheumatic diseases and genetic mechanisms underlying inflammatory arthritis.
