Professor John Boswell is a leading academic in Politics and Public Policy at the University of Southampton. He serves as a co-director of the Centre for the South, a regional policy think tank. His research focuses on democratic governance, public policy implementation, and the intersection of citizen engagement with bureaucratic systems. He currently leads major projects including 'Magical Thinking in Public Policy' (OUP) and 'Weapons of the Meek: Everyday Acts of Administrative Resistance,' funded by the Leverhulme Trust.
Research interests include deliberative democracy, policy feedback mechanisms, and qualitative research methods. He has contributed to influential reports on UK governance effectiveness and health policy integration. Awards include the Ken Young Best Paper Prize (2018) and Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences (2024).
