John Bolte

John Bolte is a Professor in the Biological & Ecological Engineering Department at Oregon State University (OSU), with a career spanning over three decades. He has served as Department Head from July 2002 to March 2022. His research focuses on mathematical modeling of coupled human-natural systems, wildfire planning, climate adaptation, and coastal resilience. He holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering from Auburn University and M.S./B.S. degrees in Agricultural Engineering/Plant Science from the University of Florida. Bolte has advised at least one graduate student, Colton Avila, and teaches courses like BEE 320 (Systems Analysis & Modeling) and BEE 222 (Ecological Engineering Computation).

His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, including agent-based modeling and scenario analysis, to address complex environmental challenges such as wildfire management and coastal hazard adaptation. Notable contributions include developing frameworks for evaluating policy impacts on forest landscapes and coastal communities. Awards include the 2024 Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Award and the 2022 Auburn University Outstanding Alumni distinction.

Bolte actively engages in public service, including roles on the Benton County Planning Commission (1996–present) and collaborations with watershed councils. His research has produced over 50 peer-reviewed publications, focusing on wildfire dynamics, infrastructure resilience, and climate adaptation strategies.
