Katherine Wollstein is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences at Oregon State University, affiliated with the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center (Burns), the OSU Extension Fire Program, and the OSU Sagebrush Habitat Team. Her work bridges extension and applied research, focusing on adaptive co-management of rangeland resources and fire resilience strategies.
- Ph.D. in Natural Resources (University of Idaho, 2022)
- M.S. in Forest Ecosystems and Society (Oregon State University, 2017)
- B.S. in Wildlife Ecology (Washington State University, 2011)
Dr. Wollstein’s research examines social and policy conditions for fire resilience in rangelands, emphasizing collaborative approaches among ranchers, agencies, and stakeholders. Her work addresses invasive annual grasses, ecosystem recovery post-fire, and institutional frameworks for adaptive management.
Her 15 most recent publications highlight trends in fire ecology, sagebrush conservation, and community-driven fire strategies. Notable themes include invasive species control, integrated fire management, and stakeholder collaboration to mitigate wildfire risks.
- Key research areas: Rangeland fire planning, adaptive co-management, invasive grass impact assessment
- Outreach: Developed extension materials on fire risk reduction and livestock emergency preparedness
- Advising: Accepts graduate students in Animal and Rangeland Sciences
Dr. Wollstein collaborates with the OSU Sagebrush Habitat Team and Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center, integrating fire management with rangeland ecology.
