John Beusterien is a Professor of Spanish at Texas Tech University’s Department of Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures. His research focuses on Spanish Golden Age literature, Cervantes, environmental humanities, and animal studies. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has taught at institutions including Albion College and the University of Miami. Beusterien has authored three monographs, co-edited seven books, and published over 40 articles and book reviews. Notable awards include the Don D. Walker Prize for his essay on North American Western literature and culture.
His academic contributions include directing eight Ph.D. dissertations and serving as managing editor of Cervantes: Bulletin of the Cervantes Society of America. He also leads the Lubbock Waters project, an educational initiative about the southern high plains ecosystem. Beusterien’s work bridges literature, ecology, and history, with emphasis on animals’ roles in early modern Spain and contemporary environmental challenges.
