John Baugh is a Professor of Psychology, Anthropology, Education, English, Linguistics, and African & African-American Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. He holds the endowed Margaret Bush Wilson Professorship in Arts & Sciences. His academic journey includes a PhD and MSSH from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA from Temple University.
His research focuses on the social stratification of linguistic behavior in multicultural societies, with applications in law, education, and medicine. Notably, he investigates linguistic discrimination through studies on telephone-based profiling and its legal implications. He also advocates for marginalized linguistic groups, including deaf communities and non-dominant dialect speakers.
