Johanna Gerwin

Johanna Gerwin is a Visiting Research Fellow (funded by the DFG) at Queen Mary University of London's School of Languages, Linguistics and Film, Department of Linguistics. Her research focuses on the sociocultural construction of London English dialects, including 'Cockney', Multicultural London English (MLE), and associated speaker identities. She examines metadiscourse in media, cultural products, and speakers' self-positioning.

• Education: PhD in English Linguistics from Kiel University (2013), M.A. from University of Freiburg

Key research interests include Enregisterment theory, sociolinguistic fieldwork, and intersections between linguistics and pop culture. Her current project, The Enregisterment of London English, analyzes linguistic shibboleths and speaker stereotypes via media discourse and speaker reflexivity (visit www.londontalksresearch.co.uk).

Publications span dialectal syntax (e.g., ditransitives in British English), sociolinguistic applications in music, and theoretical Enregisterment studies. Teaching expertise includes sociolinguistics, dialect variation, and language in cultural performance.
