John B. Stranges is a University Professor at Niagara University, where he has served since 1968 in roles including faculty member, department chair, and Vice President for Academic Affairs. He currently teaches in the Departments of History and Political Science within the College of Arts and Sciences, with office hours listed for Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
His education includes a B.A. in History from Niagara University (summa cum laude, gold medalist in Philosophy) and a Ph.D. in History from Columbia University (First Column Honors, Canada Council Fellow), where he participated in Seminars on China and War and Peace (1994-1995).
Dr. Stranges' research examines leadership dynamics in historical contexts, particularly how individuals and organizations master design and technology to achieve significant outcomes. His recent work analyzes case studies like the Chrysler Building's creation and Love Canal's rehabilitation, integrating interdisciplinary perspectives from economics and psychology into historical analysis. He founded the Academic Exploration Program for undecided students, co-created the University Honors Program with Dr. Judy Willard, and developed Niagara's first faculty development initiative—praised by accreditors as "a potential model for other institutions." His academic leadership also drove new degree programs in Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and the MBA, while establishing professional accreditation standards across the university.
