Professor John A. Davis is a distinguished faculty member in the Department of African American Studies at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). He joined LMU in 1978 and played a pivotal role in establishing and leading the African American Studies Department for nearly 30 years, serving as its chair for 26 years. His contributions include significantly increasing the representation of Black faculty and fostering an intellectual environment centered on Black empowerment and solutions. Beyond academia, he engaged deeply with community organizations to support Black youth, earning recognition such as KCET’s 'Unsung Hero of the Year' in 1986.
His research and advocacy focus on racial justice, social equity, and the intersection of identity and education. Davis’s legacy extends beyond LMU through the impact on generations of students and his family, with his grandchildren continuing his mission at LMU.
