Johannes Wankhammer is an Associate Professor of German at Princeton University and Director of Undergraduate Studies. His research focuses on critical theory, aesthetics, and environmental humanities, with particular attention to eighteenth-century German thought and its engagement with contemporary ecological challenges. He holds a PhD from Cornell University, where he received a Mellon Graduate Fellowship, and prior degrees from Binghamton University and the University of Graz, Austria. Previously, he served as Visiting Assistant Professor at Reed College.
His scholarship bridges intellectual history and literary analysis, examining how aesthetic concepts address modern crises of attention and ecological representation. Key works include Creations of Attention (2024), which traces the emergence of modern attention theory, and co-edited MLN Volume 136 on 'Scenes of Writing' (2021). Current projects explore an environmental history of German aesthetics, integrating material ecologies and aesthetic theory.
Awarded the Mellon Fellowship for humanities research, Wankhammer teaches courses on critical theory, German literature, and the environmental humanities. His work appears in journals like Germanic Review and Modern Language Notes, reflecting interdisciplinary engagement with philosophy, ecology, and cultural studies.
