Johannes Schmidt serves as Professor of German and Director of the ML Program within Clemson University's Department of Languages (College of Arts and Humanities), specializing in 18th-19th century German literature, philosophy, and Holocaust studies with particular expertise in Herder and Lessing scholarship.
His academic foundation includes a Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of Hamburg (1999), M.A. in Germanic Languages and Literatures from University of Massachusetts/Amherst (1995), and B.A. in Germanistics, Linguistics, and Economics from University of Konstanz (1992).
Dr. Schmidt's research examines German Enlightenment thought through Herder's philosophical contributions, Lessing's religious writings, and Holocaust/Shoah studies, extending to German drama, musicology, and exile literature. His work consistently bridges historical analysis with contemporary relevance, particularly in exploring Jewish emancipation and cultural trauma. Teaching responsibilities encompass German language/culture courses, WWII/Shoah seminars, and specialized literature instruction.
Recent publications (2020-2024) reveal intensified focus on Herder's conceptual frameworks—temporality, sensory philosophy, and Bückeburg-era development—alongside growing engagement with Holocaust documentation. The scholarly output spans philosophy, literary history, and interdisciplinary humanities with significant contributions to German-Jewish intellectual history.
As co-editor of the International Herder Yearbook since 2013 and former International Herder Society treasurer-secretary (2006-2013), Dr. Schmidt maintains active scholarly leadership. His committee service includes presidency of South Carolina's AATG chapter (2003-2005, 2006) and multiple university-level appointments at Clemson.
