Johannes Petry

Johannes Petry is a Senior Researcher at Goethe University Frankfurt and Principal Investigator of the DFG-funded StateCapFinance project. He holds an Honorary Research Fellow position and previously served as Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Warwick’s Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS), where he earned his PhD. His research focuses on global finance transformations, Chinese capital markets, and financial infrastructures’ political economy. Petry combines fieldwork across 12+ cities with 250+ expert interviews and ethnographic observations at financial industry events.

Education: PhD in International Political Economy (University of Warwick), degrees in political science, economics, and comparative public policy. His work bridges academia and policy through contributions to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission and European Commission reports.

Research interests emphasize varieties of capital markets, state capitalism’s role in directing financial outcomes, and infrastructural power in global finance. His book project Capital Markets with Chinese Characteristics challenges liberal convergence theories by analyzing how China’s state-owned exchanges prioritize developmental objectives over neoliberal principles.

Awards include the Royal Geographical Society’s 2022 Economic Geography Prize and 2024 PPE Young Scholar Award. He co-founded the Warwick Critical Finance Group and chairs the International Political Economy Working Group of Germany’s Political Science Association.

Publications span New Political Economy, Economy & Society, and Review of International Political Economy, with media contributions to Financial Times, Washington Post, and The Conversation.
