Johannes Paßmann is a Junior Professor (W2) of 'History and Theory of Social Media and Platforms' at Ruhr University Bochum and Principal Investigator at University of Siegen’s SFB 1472 'Transformations of the Popular'. His research focuses on digital media historiography, platform studies, and qualitative digital methods. He has held academic positions at Utrecht University, the University of Basel, and was a research fellow at Locating Media. Paßmann’s work combines theoretical insights from media studies with empirical analysis of web archives and platform practices.
He earned his Ph.D. with The Social Logic of the Like, awarded the Dirlmeyer Prize. His research explores online commenting systems, web archive methodologies, and the historical technography of social media platforms. He leads projects like 'Historical Technography of Online Comments' and 'Qualitative Digital Methods'.
