Ljungberg is a researcher in early modern history with a particular focus on the history of religion. His work examines religious dissenters in the early modern Nordic region and explores concepts of privacy before the right to privacy was formally established. He investigates how social networks, mobility, and new media shaped generational experiences of religious dissent. His current research project 'Early adopters of the Lutheran North' examines the period from early Nordic freedom of the press legislation to the opening of religious freedom through the Danish liberal constitution of 1849 and the Swedish Dissenter Act of 1860.
Ljungberg's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on religious dissent and privacy in early modern Europe. His work spans edited volumes on religious enlightenment in the Nordic countries, the history of conscience in Sweden, and privacy in early modern contexts. His research connects historical insights to contemporary debates about privacy, arguing that understanding historical approaches to privacy protection can inform current policy discussions.
His scholarly contributions include editorial roles as main editor of '1700-tal: Nordic Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies' and previously as review editor for 'Scandia: Journal for Historical Research.' He is also guest editor for a 2025 thematic issue of Historisk Tidskrift on the theme of 'Faith.'
