Johannes Gemkow is a research associate at the Institute for Communication and Media Studies, University of Leipzig, and affiliated with the Leipzig Research Centre Global Dynamics (ReCentGlobe). His work focuses on media education, social media, populism, youth, media and information literacy, mediatization, and qualitative social research. He contributes to the Research Institute for Social Cohesion and is a member of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA), German Society for Educational Science (DGfE), and Society for Media Education and Communication Culture (GMK).
- Education: BA in Communication and Media Studies (University of Leipzig, 2008–2013); MA in Media and Communication Studies with focus on media anthropology (University of Halle-Wittenberg, 2013–2015); doctoral student in Media Competence and Acquisition Research (since 2016).
Research addresses media literacy, mediatization, social media's role in youth experiences with populism, and qualitative methodologies. His projects include Mediennutzungsstrategien und -kompetenzen (2020–2024), funded by the BMBF, exploring pathways to digital participation. Publications emphasize theoretical and methodological synergies in media education and interdisciplinary analyses of media's societal impact.
Teaching includes seminars on communication studies, media education theory, and qualitative methods at the University of Leipzig. He analyzes media's role in constructing social reality, interdependencies between media development and societal change, and institutional frameworks of media education.
