Johannes Espolin Roksund Hov is a Professor of Gastroenterology at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo, and a Senior Consultant at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet. He leads the Genomics and Metagenomics in Inflammatory Disorders group at the Norwegian PSC Research Center and Research Institute of Internal Medicine. His work focuses on cholangiopathies, inflammatory bowel diseases, and microbiome interactions in inflammatory processes. Key affiliations include the Research Institute of Internal Medicine, Norwegian PSC Research Center, and Oslo University Hospital.
Dr. Hov holds dual qualifications: a Medical Doctorate (MD, 2003) and a PhD (2011) from the University of Oslo, with his doctoral thesis investigating functional genetics in primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). His career includes postdoctoral research (2011-2015) and senior scientist roles (2015-2019) at the Norwegian PSC Research Center, alongside clinical service as a gastroenterologist.
Research priorities include PSC pathogenesis, IBD-PSC overlaps, and biomarker development for cholangiocarcinoma. His lab integrates genomic approaches with clinical studies to identify genetic modifiers (e.g., PNPLA3, TGR5) and environmental factors influencing disease progression. Ongoing projects like IBSEN III explore IBD epidemiology in Norway, while StopAutoimmunity targets early interventions in autoimmune disorders.
Publications emphasize genetic risk loci (e.g., GPR35, TCF4), immune pathways, and lifestyle influences on PSC. Methodological strengths include large-scale GWAS analyses and functional validation of candidate genes. Collaborations span clinical-trial design for PSC therapies and translational microbiome studies in inflammatory diseases.
