Prof. Dr. Johannes Bauer is a full professor for Educational Research and Methodology at the University of Erfurt's Faculty of Education since October 2016. He serves as Bachelor Education Science program coordinator, senate member for ErfurtLab, and contact person for recognition matters at the Faculty of Education. Additionally, he is a member of the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour (IPB) and the institute council.
His research focuses on evidence-based practice in education, teacher education, professional communication skills development, cognitive self-regulation in teaching, and scientific thinking. His work bridges educational theory and practice, particularly examining how teachers understand, evaluate, and apply research evidence in their professional contexts. He investigates fragile evidence comprehension, professional conversation training, and the development of critical thinking among educators.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on the intersection of educational psychology and teacher development. His work consistently examines how teachers engage with research evidence, develop professional communication skills, and build cognitive self-regulation capacities. The research spans multiple educational contexts including teacher-parent communication, physician-patient interactions, and classroom teaching scenarios.

Prof. Bauer has secured significant research funding from multiple prestigious sources including the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), German Research Foundation (DFG), German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Independent Research Fund Denmark (IRFD), Israel Science Foundation (ISF), and Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SBFI). He currently leads the 'voLeA' project developing video-based teaching modules for medical communication skills (BMBF-funded) and 'Aufklärung Reloaded' focused on changing irrational beliefs and promoting scientific thinking.
His work is supported by the Erfurt Laboratory for Empirical Research and he collaborates extensively with the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour. His research methodology combines qualitative and quantitative approaches with particular expertise in latent profile analysis and professional conversation training assessment.
