Søndergaard's primary research interests include tax and VAT compliance, undeclared work, gender norms, and ethnic relations. She primarily conducts interdisciplinary quantitative research that bridges economics, sociology, and legal studies. Her work often utilizes large-scale tax data to examine compliance behaviors and informal economic activities, with particular attention to how gender norms intersect with economic behavior in the tax domain.
Her publication history reveals a clear research trajectory from migration policy studies during her doctoral work toward tax compliance research. The interdisciplinary nature of her work combines methodologies from economics, sociology, and legal studies, with consistent focus on quantitative analysis of policy-relevant issues. Her most recent work demonstrates sophisticated use of linked individual-level tax data to estimate undeclared work in Denmark.
Prior to joining Copenhagen Business School, Søndergaard worked from 2017-2023 as an analyst in the Compliance Analysis Unit of the Danish Tax Agency. Her current research project examining tax compliance of small and medium-sized companies represents a natural continuation of this professional experience and is directly funded by the Danish Tax Agency, indicating strong institutional relevance and support for her work.
