Johanne Benard is a Professor in the Department of French Studies and Associate Dean of Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen's University. She holds a Ph.D. from Université de Montréal (1989) and specializes in 20th-century French literature, focusing on intertextuality, intermediality, and authors like Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Colette, Cocteau, Beckett, and Sarraute. Her research explores connections between Céline’s work and Shakespearean drama, as well as the intersection of literature and theatre.
Education: Ph.D. in French Literature, Université de Montréal (1989). Notable publications include L’inter-dit célinien (2000) and edited volumes such as Reread Journey to the End of the Night (2022). She regularly contributes to the Quebec journal Jeu, analyzing contemporary theatre productions and literary trends. Courses taught include advanced grammar, 20th-century French novels, and modern theatre studies.
Her scholarly work bridges literary analysis and cultural critique, with a focus on textual innovation and historical context. She has held editorial roles and participated in international conferences on Céline studies. Current research emphasizes Céline's pamphlets and their polemical legacy, as well as intertextual dynamics in Francophone literature.
