Johanna Fleckenstein

Johanna Fleckenstein is a Junior Professor for Digital Teaching and Learning in Classrooms at the Department of Applied Educational Science, Institute of Educational Science, within the Faculty of Educational and Social Sciences at the University of Hildesheim. She is also the Head of the BMBF junior research group FORMAT at the IPN Kiel. Her work bridges educational research, digital technologies, and artificial intelligence to enhance classroom learning, particularly in writing and language education.

Research Interests: Her research focuses on digital learning environments, automated feedback using AI and LLMs, writing competence, multilingualism, teacher professional development, and empirical educational research through intervention and experimental studies. She investigates how AI-generated feedback impacts student motivation, text revision, and emotional responses, and develops tools for formative assessment in classrooms.

Recent Publications Trends: Her recent work (2023–2024) centers on AI and LLM applications in education, including AI detection in student writing, automated feedback systems, and digital writing support. These studies appear in top journals such as Computers and Education: Artificial Intelligence, Learning and Instruction, and Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, reflecting a strong interdisciplinary trend combining education, psychology, and AI.

Grants and Leadership: She leads the BMBF-funded junior research group FORMAT (2021–2026) and is a key investigator in the KISS-Pro consortium (2023–2026), focusing on AI-based feedback systems in schools. She holds governance roles including Deputy Head of Department, member of the Center for Digital Change board, Ethics Committee, Research Commission, and Senate at her university.

Labs and Teams: She leads the FORMAT research group, a collaborative project between the University of Hildesheim and the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) Kiel. The team includes interdisciplinary partners from CAU Kiel, University of Göttingen, FernUniversität Hagen, and PH Zürich.
