Johanna Engström is an Assistant Professor at the University of Florida (UF). She holds affiliate faculty positions at the Florida Climate Institute and the UF Water Institute. Her research focuses on Earth System Science, Sustainability, and Hydroclimatology with applications to climate services, renewable energy development, and water resource management. She employs mixed methods approaches to address societal challenges like sustainable land use and long-term water management.
Engström holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Florida (2017), an M.S. in Physical Geography and Ecosystem Analysis from Lund University (2011), and a B.S. in Physical Geography from Lund University (2009). Her educational background bridges Scandinavian environmental science traditions and U.S.-based applied climatology.
Her research interests include climate change impacts on ecosystems, extreme weather event analysis, and decision support systems for sustainable resource management. Recent work explores transforming abandoned mines into solar farms and analyzing the role of climate in wildfires. She has published widely on drought vulnerability assessments and hydropower optimization in the southeastern U.S.
Engström’s publications span interdisciplinary journals such as Natural Hazards, Climate Research, and Earth’s Future, addressing topics from coastal management to wildfire dynamics. She is currently accepting graduate student applications to expand her research team.
