Johanna Annala is a University Lecturer in Education at the University of Helsinki and holds an Associate Professor II (20%) position at the University of Bergen (2024–2026). She has held visiting roles at institutions including the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (Uppsala University) and the University of Melbourne. Her research focuses on higher education curriculum development, academic pedagogy, student engagement, and disciplinary knowledge practices. She is an Associate Editor of Studies in Higher Education and has contributed to editorial boards of key journals. Notable fellowships include the Erik Allardt Fellowship and visiting roles at international institutions. Her work addresses transnational education, decolonial curriculum reform, and the intersection of research and teaching in higher education.
Her research interests span curriculum theory, student agency, and knowledge structures in education. She explores how disciplinary boundaries shape curricula and advocates for inclusive pedagogical frameworks. Recent work examines settler ignorance in educational content and the role of hospitality in academic knowledge practices.
