Johan van der Walt serves as a Full Professor at the University of Luxembourg within the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance, Department of Law since August 2011. His academic career spans multiple continents with prior professorships at the University of Glasgow (2007-2011) and University of Johannesburg (1996-2006), alongside an ongoing Extraordinary Professorship at the University of Pretoria (2009-present).
His research centers on Philosophy of Law, Legal Theory, Jurisprudence, and Constitutional Theory, characterized by a distinctive methodological fusion of continental European and Anglo-American philosophical traditions with political theory and legal anthropology. This interdisciplinary approach critically examines foundational legal concepts including sovereignty, constitutional frameworks, and sacrificial dimensions in law.
