Johan van de Koppel is a Senior Scientist in biophysical self-organization at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) since 2007 and has been an Honorary Professor at the University of Groningen since 2011. His work bridges mathematical modeling and experimental ecology to study spatial patterns in marine ecosystems.
- Research Focus: Self-organized spatial patterns in intertidal ecosystems (mussel beds, tidal marshes, salt marshes).
- Key Concepts: Turing's activator-inhibitor principle, Einstein's Brownian motion, and Cahn's phase separation principle.
His research demonstrates how spatial self-organization enhances ecosystem resilience. Recent publications highlight applications in coastal protection and bio-geomorphic interactions.
- Scientific Awards:
- Eo Wijers Prize (2023) for landscape design innovation in Zeeland's delta.
- Advising: Supervised PhD candidate Marte Stoorvogel, whose work on tidal marsh erosion mitigation was featured in a 2025 NIOZ news item.
