معرفی
Johan Sandberg is a Professor of Viral Immunology at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, Karolinska Institutet since 2013. His research focuses on innate and adaptive immune mechanisms in host defense against viral and bacterial infections. He leads the research group 'Role of T cells in human host defense,' which investigates T cell-mediated immunity, particularly MAIT (mucosa-associated invariant T) cells and iNKT (invariant natural killer T) cells, their roles in immune control and immunopathogenesis.
Dr. Sandberg holds a PhD in Immunology from Karolinska Institutet (1999) and a Docent title (2006). His work includes groundbreaking studies on MAIT cell specialization in human tissues, published in Science Immunology in 2024. His group collaborates with the Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM) and explores translational approaches to combat infections, including vaccine development and immunotherapy strategies.
Key research interests include MAIT cell responses to pathogens like SARS-CoV-2, HIV, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. His lab has received grants from the Swedish Research Council, Swedish Cancer Society, and the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation. Collaborations involve projects on immune evasion mechanisms, viral immunopathology, and tissue-resident T cell populations.
Dr. Sandberg advises PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, fostering a dynamic research environment. His team’s work bridges basic and clinical immunology, with recent studies on MAIT cell dynamics in sepsis, appendicitis, and post-COVID-19 recovery. The group actively seeks talented researchers for projects in T cell biology and infectious diseases.
