Johan Liljestrand is a Senior Lecturer (Universitetslektor) and Docent in Pedagogy at Gävle University, Sweden. He teaches in teacher education programs and serves as an education leader for the Master’s program in Educational Sciences. His research focuses on Religious Education, Curriculum Theory, and the intersection of education with pluralistic societal values.
His key research interests include: 1) Student-centered learning in controversial topics like Religion and Social Studies; 2) Balancing cultural pluralism with shared societal values through education; 3) Organizational development in educational institutions for sustained pedagogical improvement. He collaborates with national networks like the Swedish Religious Education Research Network (NFR) and the STEP research group on educational policy.
Current projects include analyzing Christianity's portrayal in upper-secondary Religion Education (with Dr. David Carlsson and others), preschool leadership dynamics (with Dr. Annika Elm), and curriculum dilemmas in value-based education.
He participates in international research collaborations exploring professional development in early childhood education and the role of educational policy in shaping institutional practices. His work emphasizes ethical pedagogical dilemmas in multicultural contexts and sustainable educational leadership structures.
