Johan Höglund is a Professor of English Literature at the Department of Languages, Linnaeus University, and a member of the Linnaeus University Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies. He leads research projects funded by the Swedish Research Council (FORMAS) and collaborates with Rebecca Duncan on studies of palm oil fiction. His roles include teaching English and American literature, cultural studies, and supervising doctoral theses across institutions.
Education: Holds degrees from Brown University and Uppsala University.
Research Interests: Focuses on imperialism and popular culture, particularly the intersection of colonialism and the climate crisis. Explores representations in literature, film, and games, with emphasis on Gothic traditions, postcolonial theory, and Anthropocene studies. Key works include The American Climate Emergency Narrative (2024) and The American Imperial Gothic (2014).
Research Groups: Active in the Center for Studies in Popular Culture (PoCuS), the Cluster for Ecology, Culture and Coloniality (ECCo), and the Linnaeus University Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies.
Grants & Projects: Leads Future Food Cultures in the Anthropocene (FORMAS) and World-Literature and the Other Oil (Swedish Research Council). Current projects include Narratives of Empire and Intermedial Ecocriticism.
Media Engagement: Regularly contributes to media discussions on colonialism, climate fiction, and cultural studies, including lectures at the Gothenburg Book Fair and podcast appearances.
