Johan Hjulstad

Johan Hjulstad is an Associate Professor at the Institute of International Studies and Interpreter Education, under the Faculty of Teacher Education and International Studies at Oslo Metropolitan University. His work focuses on sign language accessibility, deaf education, and the role of technology in shaping communication spaces for deaf students. He actively collaborates with institutions like Gallaudet University and contributes to projects such as iPAR (partnership for strengthened teacher competence) and the Erasmus Mundus Master’s program in Applied Deaf Studies.

His research spans topics including identity negotiations in virtual classrooms, semiotic ecologies of digitally mediated learning, and the impact of videoconference technology on sign language interactions. Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to deaf pedagogy, language socialization, and inclusive education.
