Johan August Udden (1859–1932) was a Swedish-American geologist and academic. He held the rank of Professor at Augustana College (1888–1911) before joining the University of Texas (UT) in 1911 as Geologist and later Director of the Bureau of Economic Geology (1915–1932). He was affiliated with the Department of Geology but focused on research rather than teaching.

Research Interests: Udden pioneered studies in sedimentary processes, grain-size classification, and subsurface geology. He developed the geometric grain-size scale still used today. His work included investigations of loess deposits, fossil ice crystals, and potash reserves in the Permian Basin. He also contributed to hydrogeology through detailed studies of groundwater systems in Illinois.

Legacy: Udden’s theoretical insights guided oil exploration in Texas and established foundational methodologies in sedimentology. He authored 46 papers and pioneered subsurface geology laboratory techniques.
