Joel Waldfogel is a Professor and holder of the Frederick R. Kappel Chair in Applied Economics at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. Previously, he served as the Ehrenkranz Family Professor of Business and Public Policy at Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania), where he held roles as department chair and associate vice dean. He also served as an associate professor of economics at Yale University and as associate dean for MBA and MS programs at Carlson School (2017–2023).

His research focuses on industrial organization, law and economics, media markets, and digital products. Key topics include price advertising, piracy, pricing strategies, and revenue sharing in digital markets. He has authored over 80 scholarly articles and several books, including Digital Renaissance, The Tyranny of the Market, and Scroogenomics. His work has appeared in journals like the American Economic Review and Journal of Political Economy.

Additional Roles: Waldfogel has contributed to academic leadership through administrative roles and has written for Slate. He grew up in South Minneapolis, graduating from Washburn High School.
