Joel Sobel is a Professor of Economics at the University of California, San Diego, where he has served for over 40 years. His research focuses on game theoretic models of communication and signaling, with a particular emphasis on strategic communication. He has held extended visiting positions at institutions including Oxford, Caltech, UC Berkeley, and others.
Education: B.S. in Mathematics (1974, University of Michigan), M.A. in Economics, and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (both from University of California, Berkeley).
Sobel has received prestigious awards, including Sloan and Guggenheim Fellowships, and was elected to the Econometric Society (1990) and American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2010). He has held editorial roles as co-editor of the American Economic Review and editor of Econometrica.
His work bridges theoretical economics and applied mathematics, with contributions to behavioral economics and strategic interaction models.
