Joel Schindall is the Bernard Gordon Professor of the Practice in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at MIT. He rejoined MIT in 2002 after a 35-year industrial career in defense, aerospace, and telecommunications. His research focuses on nanotube-enhanced ultracapacitors and engineering leadership education. He co-directs the Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program (GELP), enhancing design and leadership training across MIT's School of Engineering.
Education: B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from MIT (1963-1967). Previously served as lecturer, wrote an introductory electronics course textbook, and worked at WBCN FM radio as chief engineer during graduate studies.
Research interests include energy storage systems, nanotechnology applications in capacitors, and engineering pedagogy. He co-developed a senior-level communication skills course and is developing an engineering design curriculum.
Leadership roles include VP/CTO at Loral Space and Communications, Sr. VP/Chief Engineer at Globalstar, and President of Loral Conic. Awards include IEEE Fellow (2009) for contributions to engineering leadership and technical innovation.
Labs/Teams: Associated with the Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems at MIT. Active in interdisciplinary initiatives bridging academic research and industrial practice.
