Dr. Joel Reyes-Cabrera serves as Assistant Professor of Horticulture and Plant Physiology at Texas A&M University-Kingsville Citrus Center, within the Department of Agriculture, Agribusiness, and Environmental Sciences under the Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. He joined the institution in January 2022 as a permanent faculty member specializing in sustainable citrus production systems.
His research program integrates field, greenhouse, and laboratory methodologies to investigate nutrient and water management practices for grapefruit and orange trees, with specific focus on optimizing yield, fruit quality, nutritional balance, and stress resistance. The lab conducts critical preharvest and postharvest physiological analyses to directly address challenges faced by Texas citrus producers, creating an applied research framework with immediate industry relevance.
Dr. Reyes-Cabrera teaches foundational courses including Crop Physiology (PLSS 3381) and Advanced Crop Physiology (PLSS 5352) during both Spring and Fall semesters. The research group maintains an active scientific outreach presence through Instagram under @cabrera_lab, providing real-time updates on experimental progress and practical horticultural insights for growers and students alike.
