Dr. Catherine Simpson is an Associate Professor of Sustainable/Urban Horticulture at Texas Tech University, part of the Davis College of Agriculture, Nature & Life Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Horticulture from Texas A&M University-College Station, with prior roles as an Assistant Professor and Research Scientist at Texas A&M University-Kingsville Citrus Center. Her research focuses on urban horticulture, controlled environment systems, water conservation, and plant stress physiology. Key goals include developing grant-funded programs addressing urban and controlled environment horticulture challenges. Areas of expertise include vertical greenhouse production, biochar applications, and plant-soil-water relationships.
Dr. Simpson’s academic journey includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees in environmental soil science and plant and soil science from Texas A&M-Kingsville. She is affiliated with organizations like the American Society for Horticultural Sciences and the Soil Science Society of America. Her work integrates practical solutions for sustainable agriculture, such as optimizing irrigation management, enhancing crop resilience through biofortification, and leveraging microbial symbionts in hydroponic systems.
Recent research trends highlight innovations in urban green infrastructure, therapeutic landscapes for military veterans, and enhancing crop nutritional value through agronomic practices. Articles from 2024-2025 emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to water conservation, stress tolerance, and microbial biocontrol agents in agriculture. No specific awards are noted, but her contributions to horticultural science are reflected in active grant-seeking and collaborative projects.
