Joel Nickels is Associate Professor of English at the University of Miami's College of Arts and Sciences. His scholarship focuses on modernist literature, poetry, and political philosophy, with particular emphasis on collective agency, dissident internationalism, and spatial resistance in literature.
Research Focus: Nickels' work explores the intersection of literary modernism and political theory, examining topics such as: 1) Spontaneity and collective action in avant-garde poetry; 2) Transnational resistance movements in global literature; 3) Works of Claude McKay, Wallace Stevens, and Wyndham Lewis; 4) Geographies of dissent in world literature. His 2012 book analyzes constituent power in modernist literature.
Publications: Recent works include 'World Literature and the Geographies of Resistance' (2018) and 'Claude McKay and Dissident Internationalism' (2014). Earlier scholarship examines Wallace Stevens' poetry and Wyndham Lewis' avant-garde drama through frameworks of political subjectivity and collective agency.
