Joel M. LeMon is the Rev. Dr. Donald Allen Harp, Jr. Distinguished Associate Professor of Biblical Studies and Interim Director of the Graduate Division of Religion at Emory University's Candler School of Theology. He earned a PhD (2007) from Emory, an MDiv (2001) from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a BA (1998) in Music from Shenandoah Conservatory. His research integrates music, ancient Near Eastern studies, and biblical exegesis, with a focus on the Psalms, Hebrew/Ugaritic poetry, and religious iconography. He has authored and co-edited works on topics like Psalms interpretation and ancient iconography, receiving grants for projects such as exploring violence in the Psalms. LeMon teaches at Candler, combining musical arts with biblical scholarship to foster faithful interpretation.
Research interests include the Psalms’ literary and iconographic contexts, ancient Near Eastern history, and the intersection of music with scriptural engagement. He has presented at Candler events like the 2023 Spring Convocation and Reformation Day lectures. His work bridges textual and visual analysis, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to biblical studies.
LeMon’s publications reflect his expertise in biblical exegesis and ancient cultural contexts. His current projects include studies on violence in the Psalms and ancient iconography, supported by grants from Emory University.
