Joel Gruver

Joel Gruver is a Professor of Soil Science and Sustainable Agriculture at the School of Agriculture, Western Illinois University (WIU). He serves as the Director of the WIU Organic Research Program and teaches courses including Soil Science, Soil Fertility, Nutrient Management, and Sustainable Agriculture.

• B.S. in Chemistry from Principia College
• M.S. in Agronomy from the University of Maryland
• Ph.D. in Soil Science from North Carolina State University

Dr. Gruver’s research focuses on conservation cropping systems, with emphasis on cover crops, organic grain production, and enhancing soil organic matter. He also explores innovative teaching methods in agricultural education.

His notable award includes the National No-Till Educator of the Year (2015). At WIU, he contributes to initiatives like the Organic Research Program and manages the Allison Farm facility.
