Joel Federman, Ph.D., is a Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Transformative Social Change at Saybrook University. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Philosophy from the University of Southern California (1999) and resides in San Francisco. His work focuses on reimagining societal potential through nonviolence, universal compassion, and global civil society movements. Recent research includes case studies on Egyptian democratic reforms and cross-cultural conflict resolution. He teaches courses on nonviolence theory, global activism, and social system transformation.
Key areas of expertise include human rights, multiculturalism, and prefigurative politics. Dr. Federman has led initiatives like the National Television Violence Study and the Civility Clearinghouse. He is affiliated with the American Friends of Combatants for Peace and has published in journals like Tikkun Magazine and the Los Angeles Times.
His current projects include a book on global solidarity movements and a focus on countering authoritarianism and xenophobia. Dr. Federman’s academic leadership spans dissertation committees and conference presentations on topics like media violence and social justice.
