Dr. Joel Day serves as a Lecturer in Computer Science and Undergraduate Programme Leader for Single Honours Programmes within the Department of Computer Science at Loughborough University, where he has held a faculty position since 2020. Prior to this appointment, he conducted postdoctoral research in the Dependable Systems group at Kiel University and held an EPSRC Postdoctoral Prize Fellowship at his alma mater.
His academic foundation includes a PhD in Theoretical Computer Science completed at Loughborough University in 2016. Dr. Day's research program investigates combinatorial structures in discrete sequences (words or strings) over finite symbol sets, addressing fundamental algorithmic challenges through the study of word equations and pattern matching problems. This work sits at the intersection of Theoretical Computer Science, Combinatorics on Words, and Discrete Mathematics, contributing to foundational understanding of computational properties in string-based systems.
- Recognized with an EPSRC Postdoctoral Prize Fellowship for early-career research excellence
In addition to research, Dr. Day leads undergraduate curriculum development for single honours computer science programmes, shaping academic direction while maintaining active scholarship in theoretical computer science. His EPSRC fellowship represents significant competitive research funding supporting his postdoctoral investigations at Loughborough University.
