Joel David Hamkins

Joel David Hamkins is the John Cardinal O'Hara Professor of Logic at the University of Notre Dame, with affiliations in the College of Arts and Letters and the Department of Philosophy. He holds academic appointments at the University of Oxford (Professor of Logic, Faculty of Philosophy; Sir Peter Strawson Fellow of Philosophy at University College, Oxford) and previously served at the City University of New York (CUNY) for over two decades. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, and has held visiting positions at institutions worldwide.

His research spans mathematical and philosophical logic, including set theory, modal logic, the mathematics and philosophy of the infinite, forcing, large cardinals, computability theory, and infinitary game theory. Notable works include Lectures on the Philosophy of Mathematics (MIT Press, 2021) and Proof and the Art of Mathematics (MIT Press, 2020). He is the top contributor on MathOverflow and serializes books on his substack Infinitely More.

Hamkins has received numerous grants and awards, including Simons Foundation grants, NSF funding, and teaching accolades. He has supervised over 15 doctoral students and mentored many more in research collaborations across logic and mathematics. His work has been cited extensively in the literature, and he actively contributes to academic outreach through lectures, podcasts, and YouTube content.
