Dr Joel Brown is a community ecologist affiliated with the Institute of Entomology, Czech Academy of Sciences, and collaborates with the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford. His research focuses on the ecological dynamics of Drosophila communities and their parasitoids in tropical rainforests across Australia and Papua New Guinea.
His work explores how abiotic (e.g., temperature, altitude) and biotic (e.g., host-parasitoid interactions) factors shape these communities. A key aspect of his research involves the role of endosymbiotic bacteria in mediating these interactions. He employs DNA metabarcoding and experimental manipulations to uncover patterns of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning along altitudinal gradients.
Dr Brown is primarily based in Jan Hrcek’s laboratory at the Institute of Entomology, Czech Republic, when not conducting fieldwork in tropical regions. His interdisciplinary approach integrates molecular techniques with ecological theory to advance understanding of biodiversity responses to environmental change.
