Joel Ayau serves as Senior Vocal Coach and Collaborative Piano in the College division of New England Conservatory. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Collaborative Piano from the University of Michigan, a Master of Music from The Juilliard School, and a Bachelor of Music from New York University. His career spans opera coaching, vocal collaboration, and orchestral performances across international stages.
Key professional roles include music staff positions with Washington National Opera, Portland Opera, Opera Omaha, and Wolf Trap Opera. He has prepared productions of major operas such as Samson et Dalila, Aida, Tosca, and L’Heure espagnole. Ayau’s collaborations include work with artists like Andrea Bocelli, Renée Fleming, and institutions like the National Symphony Orchestra, where he served as cover conductor and pianist.
As a vocal coach, Ayau specializes in multiple languages (Russian, French, German, Italian) and Mandarin Chinese, conducting masterclasses in Taiwan and China. His performance highlights include Carnegie Hall recitals, Kennedy Center engagements, and the Ben Folds Piano Concerto with Nashville Ballet. Former faculty positions include Shenandoah Conservatory and George Washington University.
